Brasília, October 26 (TNA) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won re-election, defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely contested presidential runoff and securing an unprecedented fourth term in office.

With all votes counted, Brazil’s electoral court said Lula secured 51.8% of the vote, defeating Bolsonaro by nearly 4.4 million votes.

Comeback Victory

The result marks a dramatic political comeback for the 80-year-old leftist leader, who had trailed Bolsonaro in the first round of voting. Lula’s victory keeps Latin America’s largest economy under left-wing leadership and denies the conservative Bolsonaro camp another return to power.

Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, had campaigned as a strong opponent of Lula. He reportedly refused to concede defeat and said he would seek to have the election results annulled, citing concerns over the extension of voting hours.

Ties With Washington

Lula is a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump, and the election result is expected to preserve some distance between Brazil and Washington. Trump had praised Flávio Bolsonaro’s performance in the first round, while tensions between the US administration and Lula’s government had grown over tariffs, Brazil’s foreign policy and the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro.

During the campaign, Lula accused the Bolsonaro family of placing US interests ahead of Brazil’s national priorities. Bolsonaro rejected the charge and criticised Lula’s approach to international relations.

Challenges Ahead

Lula will begin his fourth term amid economic and political challenges, including public debt, affordability concerns and deep ideological divisions within Brazilian society. His government will also face pressure to maintain economic stability while expanding social welfare programmes.

The narrow margin of victory and Bolsonaro’s refusal to accept the outcome could lead to further legal and political disputes. The result, however, marks a significant setback for Brazil’s conservative opposition and another major electoral victory for Lula’s Workers’ Party.
