Sydney, September 5 (TNA) Australian authorities have confirmed Sydney’s first case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu strain since it reached mainland Australia in June. Residents with pet birds or backyard chickens have been advised to avoid contact with wild birds, while dog owners have been urged to keep pets away from bird carcasses.
Authorities have warned that more cases could emerge and urged residents to prepare for possible impacts on wildlife. Australia has recorded 468 confirmed H5N1 events, including 20 in New South Wales. No cases have so far been detected in commercial poultry, captive birds or livestock in the state.
The WHO says H5N1 mainly affects birds but can also infect mammals, including humans, with infections ranging from mild illness to severe or fatal disease.
