Oslo, August 28 (TNA) His Majesty King Harald V of the Kingdom of Norway has died at the age of 89, the Royal House of Norway announced on Friday. The monarch passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time, after being hospitalised earlier this month for a blood-related illness.
King Harald, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, had been in hospital since August 17 and was treated for haemolytic anaemia and a bacterial infection, according to reports. His death ends a 35-year reign that began in January 1991.
Under Norway’s line of succession, Crown Prince Haakon has immediately become the new king. The royal palace said the announcement was made with deep sadness, while the country now enters a period of mourning for one of its most respected modern monarchs.
King Harald was widely regarded as a reform-minded and approachable head of state who helped modernise the Norwegian monarchy during his time on the throne. He is survived by Queen Sonja, their children, and grandchildren.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, is amongst the top world leaders who have mourned the demise of the King.
