New Delhi, November 7 (TNA) India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has retired from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on a 13-year career in the longest format. Shami announced his decision on Friday, saying he was stepping away from red-ball cricket with “a heavy heart and countless beautiful memories.” He is expected to continue playing in limited-overs formats.

Impressive Test Record

Shami represented India in 64 Tests and claimed 229 wickets at an average of 27.71. His record also includes six five-wicket hauls and an economy rate of 3.30. He remains one of India’s most successful fast bowlers in Test cricket and has established himself as a key part of the country’s pace attack across home and overseas conditions.

Memorable Debut

Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on November 6, 2013. He announced himself immediately, taking nine wickets in the match and earning praise for his pace, accuracy and ability to generate late movement.

Over the following years, his reverse swing, sharp yorkers and relentless intensity made him one of India’s most effective red-ball bowlers. His performances were marked by an ability to extract movement with an older ball and attack the stumps consistently.

End of Red-Ball Era

Shami last played a Test for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. Injuries and fitness concerns subsequently kept him away from the Test setup.

His retirement closes the Test chapter of a career remembered for fast spells, late swing and match-changing bursts. Shami will now focus on white-ball cricket, where he remains available for India and domestic competitions.
