Auckland, November 4 (TNA) India defeated New Zealand by nine wickets in the rain-affected first ODI at Eden Park on Wednesday to take a 1–0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing a revised target of 103 runs in 28 overs, India reached 106 for one in 12.1 overs.

Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 58, while Virat Kohli scored 38 not out to complete a comfortable victory. The match was reduced after rain interrupted play.

New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs after India captain Shubman Gill elected to field. The hosts struggled to build sustained partnerships, with India’s bowlers keeping the scoring under control throughout the innings.

The Indian attack made early inroads, with Arshdeep Singh dismissing Will Young for nine. India also benefited from a sharp fielding effort by Rohit Sharma, who ran out Daryl Mitchell during New Zealand’s innings.

India’s chase was briefly disrupted by the dismissal of Rohit Sharma, but Gill and Kohli quickly settled the innings and guided the visitors across the revised target without further difficulty. The result gives India an early advantage in the ODI series following their recent T20I campaign in New Zealand.

The second ODI will be played at [venue and date to be confirmed in the official schedule]. The series is being closely watched ahead of preparations for the next 50-over World Cup.
