AURANGABAD || In a tragic incident in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, at least 15 migrant labourers were run over by a speeding train on Friday, police said. All the deceased were headed to their homes in Madhya Pradesh when the goods train mowed them at around 5:30 am on the Aurangabad-Jalna railway line.
One person has been seriously injured. Police believe that the victims, walking for long distances, were tired and apparently fell asleep either near the railway tracks or on them. The Indian Railways has ordered a probe into the incident.
“During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. An inquiry has been ordered,” the ministry said in a statement posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Authorities have been quoted saying that the labourers who were run over were natives of Umarya and Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh and were working in SRG Company in Jalna. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has mourned the loss of lives in the incident.
They were going to Bhusawal to catch a train, a police official informed.
