LUCKNOW || Contrary to apprehensions of protests on the roads and violence, the Friday prayers in Uttar Pradesh passed off peacefully on Friday, with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the state, police said. Last week, violence had broken out at many places in the state, leaving many dead.
A worried state government and the police left nothing to chance this time and braced up for the event with full bandobast.
Internet was blacked out in 21 districts of the state, including in the capital Lucknow. Director-General of Police (DGP) OP Singh told reporters that the day passed off peacefully, with no incident reported from any of the 75 districts. Other than the civil police, the provincial armed constabulary (PAC), rapid action force (RAF), para-military forces had also been deployed at risk-prone districts and places.
The DGP also clarified that the total death toll in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) stood at 19 in Uttar Pradesh.
