LUCKNOW || The Uttar Pradesh unit of the Indian National Congress on Saturday upped the ante against the BJP government in the state over the gang rape and setting on fire of a woman in Unnao district of the state. She was set ablaze for not withdrawing the complaint and she died at a New Delhi hospital late on Friday.
While Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra cancelled her programmes on the second day of her UP trip and rushed to meet the family of the victim in Unnao, party workers took to the streets in the state capital and tried to gherao the state BJP office on the Vidhan Sabha Marg and were cane charged by the police.
Vadra accrued the UP government and chief minister Yogi Adityanath of merely speaking of women security and improved law and order while the fact was that “UP had become unsafe for the women and girls“. Congress leaders – MLC Deepak Singh, former union minister Jitin Prasad and national spokesman Rajiv Tyagi were among the hundreds of party workers who were arrested by the police for their protest outside the ruling party office.
