Bollywood’s ‘Soorma Bhopali’ Jagdeep Dies At 81

MUMBAI || Tragedy hit the Hindi film industry again on Wednesday night as veteran Bollywood comedian Jagdeep passed away following age-related ailments. He was 81. Known for his unique way of dialogue delivery, Jagdeep was famous for his comic roles in Sholay where he essayed the role of a timber merchant Soorma Bhopali.

His catchphrase in the film “Mera naam Soorma Bhopali aise hi nahin hai” is still remembered by millions of his fans.

Jagdeep is also remembered for his performance in the comedy film Andaz Apna Apna, where he played Salman Khan’s father Bankelal.

He appeared in more than 400 films. His son Javed Jaffrey is a popular film actor while his other son Naved also did some TV serials. Jagdeep worked with almost all big stars of his time, including Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra.
