BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has resigned from his position and stepped down from active primary membership of the party, in a formal letter addressed to National President Nitin Nabin dated August 17, 2026. In the letter, Poonawalla referenced an earlier communication dated July 30, 2026, in which he had offered to resign unconditionally from all party positions, citing "pressing financial and personal circumstances." He said the party had at the time declined to accept his resignation and asked him to reconsider. However, after what he described as "long and hard contemplation," Poonawalla said he had arrived at a final decision to press ahead with being relieved of his role as National Spokesperson and his active primary membership. He added that events over the past few days, involving individuals he said he had already detailed to the leadership, had reinforced his earlier decision.
