NEW DELHI || Former union finance minister Arun Jaitley, who died after prolonged illness aged 66 on Saturday, was cremated with full state honours at the Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Sunday evening. His son Rohan lit the funeral pyre amid heavy rains and gutsy winds, which many likened to the tears from heaven for the departed soul. A battery of political figures, friends, lawyers, dignitaries were present at the funeral.
Prominent among them being vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu, defence minister Rajnath Singh, union home minister Amit Shah, working president of the BJP JP Nadda, Smriti Irani, Anurag Thakur, Jitendra Singh and chief ministers of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi and Bihar. Om Birla, the Lok Sabha speaker was also present.
Among others who paid their last respects to the departed BJP veteran included Manish Sisodia, N Chandrababu Naidu, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kapil Sibal,
Earlier at his South Delhi residence, prominent people who paid him floral tributes included Senior Congress leader Motilal Vohra, NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel, RLD leader Ajit Singh and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had last night paid the tributes to the late finance minister.
His body was kept at the BJP head office where party workers were allowed to pay their last respects to the departed soul. PM Modi is on a foreign tour so he could not make it to the funeral. He however remembered Jaitley as a “dear friend” at a function in Bahrain. Family members of the late BJP leader had urged the prime minister not to abort his foreign trip mid-way.
