LUCKNOW || Plastic pollution has fast hampered the purity of the Ganga in cities on its banks and that has irked people and scientists alike. In order to work towards tangible solutions to rid the holy river of plastic waste, several rounds of deliberations have been going on with German experts.
Both Haridwar and Rishikesh are being considered for these cleanliness activities. To contain environment pollution courtesy plastic waste, German scientists are in the country. In the first phase, officials are working on cleaning Haridwar, Rishikesh, Narendra Nagar and Muni Ki Reti ahead of the Mahakumbh.
The meeting held at the Nagar Nigam Rishikesh auditorium was presided over by Commissioner Narendra Singh Quiriyal. The meeting has decided that under the Namami Gange Plan, the rejuvenation of the Ganga will be the first priority. In doing so the GIZ monitored Ganga Plastic city Partnership Plan will cut down the spiralling pollution pangs in Haridwar and Rishikesh.
National and international GIZ experts sat across the table to thrash out options to make Ganga cleaner. Present with them were SPMG officials who will work on creating alternative plans modelled on Central schemes so that work could be streamlined at a state level.
The concerned department officials also elaborated on a distinct roadmap that will ensure the serenity and purity of the now polluted Ganga is restored. The meeting also looked in fruitful ways to manage waste.
As Uttarakhand gears up for the upcoming Mahakumbh, there are growing discussions in the state around how best to curtail the growing menace of pollution of water bodies by those revellers who grace the state during Kumbh and other holy festive occasions. Even the officials concerned are ready to take this growing problem as a challenge and try working out an action plan.
There is consensus on the point that with the cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh being tourist locales, the idea essentially will have to be stopping waste from hotels from spilling over. Three types of categories will be demarcated. One from the big hotels, then the small hotels and lastly the muck littered courtesy dhaba owners.
